  1. What is Ava Clastics?
    Ava Clastics is a cloud-hosted analogue database system providing quantitative sedimentological data for reservoir modelling and prospect evaluation. It allows users to explore fully-validated analogue data with sophisticated filtering and charting capabilities.
    For reservoir modelling, Ava Clastics uses proprietary logic to deliver automated parameterisation of facies modelling algorithms based on a user-defined subset of relevant analogues.
  2. Who makes Ava Clastics?
    Ava Clastics is developed by Petrotechnical Data Systems (PDS Group). PDS Group has been delivering innovative software technologies, R&D and consulting services to the petroleum industry for over 20 years, from technology centres in The Hague, London, Houston and Sofia.
  3. What analogue databases are used in Ava Clastics?
    Ava Clastics is built upon advanced relational databases developed by world-leading researchers at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Currently implemented in Ava Clastics are the FAKTS (fluvial), SMAKS (shallow-marine) and DMAKS (deep-marine) databases.
  4. What kind of support is available for Ava Clastics?
    If you subscribe to Ava Clastics, you will have access to online documentation including workflow examples, plus timely assistance from our Customer Success Team to help you manage both the initial deployment into your organisation and support your ongoing usage.

  5. Where can I report defects on Ava Clastics?
    Please send any feedback to the Customer Success Team through our online defect report form. We also have a Known Issues (available from the application landing page under the product support tab) document which details acknowledged issues, corresponding fixes or workarounds in the current Ava Clastics release.
  6. How is my privacy protected with Ava Clastics?

Ava Clastics – Web Portal  
  1. Can I create a new Ava Clastics account if I do not have an existing account with Microsoft?
    Yes, you do not need to have an existing Microsoft account as long as you can provide a valid email address, but it is recommended to use a Microsoft account if you have one.
  2. Which internet browsers and associated versions does Ava Clastics support?
    Ava Clastics is guaranteed to work with latest versions of Google Chrome and Internet Explorer (v.11). Other browsers are partially supported.
  3. What is the difference between the web portal and the Ava Clastics window in Petrel* E&P software platform?
    The web portal allows a user to screen analogue data and build a Depositional Concept (DC) based on a filtered subset of relevant analogues. The window in the Petrel platform has the same functionality, with the addition of the Petrel platform link, where the user maps their analogue-based Depositional Concepts to specific 3D grids and zones in Petrel platform models.

  4. Can multiple users have access to the same user account and/or Depositional Concepts?
    We are currently building collaboration capabilities, therefore, the ability to collaborate in real time with other users around a single Depositional Concept is coming soon.

Ava Clastics – Analogue Databases: FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS
  1. What are the benefits of the FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS databases over other analogue databases?
    The FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS database are among the most advanced relational databases available for fluvial and shallow-marine environments. They have rigorous quality control and contain unique features such as transition statistics which facilitate the use of more advanced facies modelling algorithms to generate more realistic geological architectures in subsurface reservoir models. FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS are actively maintained and constantly growing as new data are added.
  2. Where can I find more information about the FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS databases?
    More details about the FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS databases can be found on the Ava Clastics website as well as on the University of Leeds’ research group webpages: Fluvial Research GroupShallow Marine Research Group and Turbidites Research Group.
  3. Where can I find and download the published studies used in the FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS databases?
    When looking at the list of filtered studies in the Ava Clastics interface, you can copy the reference citation and use it in, for instance, an online search engine or your company's publication library to find the published article. Copyright restrictions prevent us from hosting copies of the articles themselves. In the future, we may provide a direct URL link (DOI) to the studies where they have been published.
    N.B. That these studies might come at an additional cost to the journal in which they are published.
  4. Is there an option to add data to Ava Clastics?
    The FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS databases are owned by the University of Leeds and data can be added in cooperation with the University. If you are interested in this, please get in touch with through our Customer Success Team.
    In addition, we can help to integrate company proprietary databases, even if they have a different structure to FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS, into Ava Clastics.
  5. Is there an option to create and store custom queries for screening the databases?
    Our advanced filtering capabilities should enable you to generate any query you wish and store this within a Depositional Concept, but if there is something else you would like to see please get in touch via the Customer Success Team.
  6. How are the analogue database data translated for use in facies modelling algorithms?
    In close collaboration with the academics at the University of Leeds, we have built an extensive set of customisable rules and calculations that convert the raw data of FAKTS, SMAKS and DMAKS into the required input parameters for facies modelling algorithms currently available on the Petrel platform.
  7. Can the Ava Clastics translation logic be customised to include company-specific guidelines etc.?
    Yes, Ava Clastics can be customised in a variety of ways, enabling you to hard-code and distribute expert knowledge throughout your organisation. Please contact the Customer Success Team to discuss this topic.

Ava Clastics – Petrel Platform Plug-in
  1. Which versions of the Petrel platform does Ava Clastics support?
    Ava Saturation has been verified to work with Petrel 2016, 2017 and 2018. Versions of Ava Clastics compatible with Petrel 2014 and 2015 can be made available on request.
  2. Are there any plans to expand the number of facies modelling algorithms usable in Ava Clastics?
    Yes, the goal for Ava Clastics is to improve and expand its capabilities, progressively including new algorithms as they become available. User feedback will be helpful in guiding and prioritising these developments.
  3. Will Ava Clastics support other reservoir modelling packages in the future?
  4. There is no reason why Ava Clastics cannot be connected to any reservoir modelling platform which has an accompanying API or SDK. If you are an Ava Clastics user, please visit the Ava Clastics application portal for a more technical version of our FAQs.
