For Jean-Francois Champollion the Rosetta Stone was a puzzle that had to be solved. He struggled for years, overcoming the suspicion and hostility of post Napoleonic Europe, to gather and analyse fragmented artefacts and literary sources that would enable him to derive a consistent phonetic and ideographic interpretation of the hieroglyphs. His motivation enabled him to succeed, producing a dictionary that helped archaeologists bring to light the incredible scientific, societal and engineering achievements of the Ancient Egyptians.

A brilliant, theoretical and experimental scientist, Marie Curie won Nobel Prizes in both physics and chemistry. Through relentless research, she discovered polonium and radium, formulated the theory of radioactivity, and pioneered medical applications in radiology and radio therapy. Showing true grit, she took her mobile units into WW1 battlefields; the X-rays she received there eventually proving fatal. In dedicating her scientific genius to the benefit of mankind, she made the ultimate human sacrifice.
